The Fireflies, or Lampyridae are light emitting beetles that many people know from childhood. They are mostly summer creatures, arising in spring in our area. There are more than one species in the majority of areas and are often very similar in appearance for the males. The yellow light emitters are in the genus Photinus mostly. It is a genus with about 34 species. 10 to 15 in this genus in any given area. The light emission by the males can be distinctively patterned for each species by timing and shape in the air. Many females do not fly in this genus but answer the male flashing with their own. The juveniles often have some glow to them. Here is an Alabama paper with a genera key. And a flash key. Like a morse coding book for these things. Don't get hypnotized. |

These species are often protected from predation by a compound that makes them distasteful to predators like spiders and birds. They do seem to have boom years in my yard. And 2019 is a good one for this species. Which may be P. pyralis, a common species. |
